MANKATO — The Mankato Department of Public Safety is hoping for another year in the clear for holiday fires.

A wreath lit up with clear lights will again be on display starting Thursday outside the Public Safety Center, 701 S. Front St. For each preventable fire in town between then and Jan. 1, a clear light will be replaced by a red one. A preventable injury will prompt a blue light.

Only one red light had to be lit in the last two years — 2015 was the first year all lights remained clear.

The 16-year tradition starts during the holiday season each year, when home fires are more likely than any other time during a given year.
